Leanne Smith, the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s director of maternal services and children’s intensive care, said the Indigenous Birth Support worker program has received calls from across Saskatchewan since launching at the newly-opened Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in 2019.
“They greatly appreciated the support that was available, especially during COVID, when family visitation was really restricted and many of them found themselves alone in the hospital situation,” Pandey said. Smith said part of the challenge is there are only five permanent positions in the team at present — too small a number to support a full educational program.
