Austin Water has a new director. Shay Ralls Roalson beat out 55 other applicants, and Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk appointed her. This makes her the first woman ever to take on this role.
“I am pleased to announce Shay Ralls Roalson as the City of Austin’s next Austin Water Director,” Cronk wrote. “I am confident that her extensive knowledge of Austin Water’s services and programs will bring the leadership and vision we are seeking for the future of our water utility services.”
Roalson earned her master’s degree from the University of Texas and is a licensed professional engineer. Her 29 years of experience in water utilities has included the planning, design and construction of complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Joining Austin Water back in April 2020 as assistant director, she leads the engineering services team who’s over delivering the utility’s $1.4 billion five-year capital program.“I would like to thank previous Austin Water Director Greg Meszaros for his many years of service and leadership.
The position comes with its share of challenges. Meszaros stepped down in February after a boil water notice that month stretched the better part of a week. It was the third such notice in Austin since 2018. Human error in February caused an issue with water turbidity, prompting the boil notice. Austin underwent a boil notice in 2018 when heavy rain caused the Colorado River to fill with silt, dirt and other debris.
Before Roalson’s time with Austin Water, she was the Central Texas Water business group manager at HDR Engineering, Inc.
