You can find it behind the counter at corner stores, in the candle section at the beauty supply, or tucked away in the corner at a pharmacy. But how did this humble elixir become a household staple?

Murray's recipe includes an alcohol base with water, and a proprietary mix of oils that gives Florida Water its citrusy, fresh, fougère kind of scent. "It has the same citrus base as [a traditional] cologne water, but shifts the emphasis to sweet orange rather than the lemon or neroli," Laguna Beach-based cosmetic chemist and perfume developer. "It adds spicy notes including lavender and clove.
