, who investigates bat coronaviruses related to SARS-CoV-2. DeCicca has covered politics, culture, and social issues in southeast Asia for nearly a decade. Here she talks with Photography Managing Editor Bill Douthitt about her career and experiences photographing the study’s tiny bats. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.Growing up I always wanted to be a photographer. I was always interested in art. My parents gave me a toy camera.
DeCicca looks through the photos she took onsite. She says she took hundreds of out-of-focus pictures of the tiny, rapidly moving bats on her search for “the perfect bat moment.”Part of my preparation was hiding in my house the week before the shoot to make sure that I didn't get COVID. Access to the bat site was limited. I brought three cameras and four lenses, so I had everything I needed in case something broke.
Q: Thank you for not sharing all the out-of-focus pictures with me! What was the most surprising thing that happened? The challenges were unexpected. The most surprising thing happened the first night. Suddenly there were little moths everywhere. It was a horrifying moment. You couldn't open your eyes without the moths hitting you. They were crawling into my PPE suit and I was thinking how long is this going to last? Finally, we turned off all the lights and waited for the moths to go away.
Then, on the last day we encountered an elephant that was getting aggressive with one of the cars in front of us. We turned around and didn't make it to the site that day. So it wasn’t that I had problems with the bats—it was the moths and the elephants!I felt very fortunate to be able to do this. I had photographed Dr. Supaporn once before, but there were multiple photographers covering her that time. This time, I was photographing alone and had free rein of the site, which was wonderful.
