Munster’s Jackson Collard, whose family includes multiple firefighters, has taken charge in his first season as the starting center.

Munster senior Jackson Collard is in his first season as the starting center.

Indeed, Collard said “all of the men on my dad’s side of the family are firefighters.” The honors student has been leaning toward following in their footsteps.“A lot of my family are firefighters — my dad, my uncle, my grandpa,” Collard said. “I feel like I want to do that. I’m kind of iffy on college.”

With this season, Collard’s first as a full-time varsity player and likely the last of his career, he has been enjoying it to the fullest, and he prepared to make the most of it. The 5-foot-10, 210-pounder emerged as the Mustangs’ center, a position he hadn’t previously played, and one of their captains.

“He’s the leader of the offensive line, for sure,” Opat said. “He knows all the film. Even the day after our game, on a Saturday, me and him are already watching film of the other team, talking about who’s good on the D-line and who to look out for. Even during the game, I can hear him when I’m going back to the huddle. He’s talking and telling everyone to do their job. He’s a good leader.
