Comedy about Asian American identity makes its world premiere this month at the Old Globe
Art does imitate life. Consider playwright Keiko Green and her “Exotic Deadly: Or the MSG Play.”
“When I was writing the play during the pandemic, there was so much talk about science and misinformation,” said Green. “From a personal place it represents when I was younger and I would see MSG and I would feel ashamed — ‘Oh my God, it was bad for you; my family is part of the legacy of MSG!’ It recontextualized my own ideas of shame about my own identity.”
“I never thought they would actually produce it,” Green confessed. “It was really kind of a shocker to me.”
