Philadelphia Democratic Rep. Joanna McClinton was elected on Tuesday as speaker of Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives, becoming the first Black woman in state history to hold that post.
McClinton, 40, becomes the second person in this 2023-24 legislative session to hold the post after her fellow . Rozzi made a point of saying he wanted to be the 102nd vote in the 203-member chamber to support McClinton’s election.A lawyer by profession, McClinton takes on the House’s presiding officer role after serving as the Democrats’ floor leader since the 2021-2022 legislative session. In winning that post, McClinton became not only the first woman to serve as a House floor leader but the first Black woman as well.
