Tory Burch is the founder and Chief Creative Officer of her titular fashion brand, Tory Burch. Burch shared her review of A Life by Simone Veil for our ongoing series of book reviews by leaders from the worlds of business, academia, entertainment and politics.It’s hard to imagine that I didn’t know about the French politician Simone Veil until she died, at 89, in 2017. But when I read her obituary, I knew I wanted to learn more. She led an extraordinary life.
Her journey is both surprising and inspiring: She was an Auschwitz survivor, but her brother and parents were killed in the concentration camps during the Holocaust. Then she trained as a lawyer and became a renegade fighter, in a Catholic country, for a woman’s right to choose She managed to win over a nation and change the course of history.
I found her life and the way she wrote about it fascinating, so I’ve been recommending her book often. It seems that everyone is used to men “making” history, and I am, of course, very interested in attempting to recalibrate that. In fact, Simone Veil is one woman who stood up for what she believed in-and in turn changed life for women in France. Even if you might not be inclined to read Veil’s memoir, I would suggest you look up her powerful speeches. They are breathtaking.
