A new study published in the journal Nature Monday morning found that 62% of the food produced by forced labor purchased in the U.S. was likely produced in the U.S.
Many of the people who pick, prepare and process food in the U.S. may have been forced to do so, a newreports—revealing that forced labor may be happening within our borders as opposed to abroad, where it has traditionally been suspected.
That means, more often than not, when forced labor produces the food Americans eat, it likely happens within the U.S. instead of at foreign locations that import food to the U.S., researchers said. They also note that the most effective tools used to prevent forced labor—trade bans and trade sanctions–focus on imports and foreign sources.
