MLB: Dave Stewart, who will have his No. 34 retired by the Oakland A’s on Sunday, experienced a career revival under Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan

OAKLAND – After Dave Stewart’s first start for the A’s under new manager Tony La Russa on July 7, 1986, against the Boston Red Sox, then-pitching coach Dave Duncan asked about a certain pitch – the forkball – that the right-hander had used to great effect.

Stewart was the winning pitcher that day and won 126 more games, including eight in the postseason as he became one of the most clutch playoff performers of his era. Several A’s players from that ‘Bash Brothers’ era that won the 1989 World Series will also likely be at the Coliseum, including Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire, Carney Lansford, and former A’s general manager Sandy Alderson.

That’ll undoubtedly be special for Stewart. La Russa signaled a new era in Oakland baseball by starting Stewart, then mostly a middle-reliever, in his first game as A’s manager. It was a fresh start for Stewart, who thought he might be done with baseball after he was released by the Phillies on May 9, 1986.

“You still have choices in your life, to do things differently and still make something of your life,” Stewart said. “I had college under my belt, you have relationships that you had built in your community through the years of playing professionally, and so I had other alternatives other than just baseball.”
