A Democrat, Vann served as a State Assemblyman as from 1975 to 2001. He was then elected to the City Council serving from 2002 to 2013.
Several politicians are paying tribute to Vann. Mayor Eric Adams has ordered all flags to be lowered to half-staff, from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, July 16 in honor of Vann.: “Al Vann was a real mentor to me and countless others, in our administration and across the landscape of civic life. He was a very special and dear friend, and we all sit on his shoulders of leadership.
