Former Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy welcomes Ncuti Gatwa to the franchise, after the actor was cast as the new Doctor.
Former Doctor Who Sylvester McCoy, who played the iconic Time Lord between 1987 and 1989, has released a video in which he warmly welcomes Ncuti Gatwa to the role. In a surprise announcement released on Sunday, the BBC officially confirmed that Sex Education star Gatwa would be taking over the role of the Doctor from Jodie Whittaker in the long-running science fiction series as the fourteenth incarnation of the character.
McCoy's first appearance as the Seventh Doctor was in the 1987 episode"Time and the Rani", following on from Colin Baker, who had been unceremoniously dropped from the role the previous year. While initially appearing as seemingly clownish, McCoy's Doctor was gradually revealed to be one of the most manipulative and secretive incarnations of the character, often outwitting his enemies and tricking them into defeat.
McCoy isn't the first former star of the hit BBC series to wish the new Doctor well. Previous Doctor Who companions have celebrated Gatwa's casting as well, along with Matt Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor, also voicing his enthusiasm. McCoy's celebration of having"another Scot" take on the role refers to Gatwa being the fourth Scottish actor to play the Doctor, following on from McCoy, David Tennant and Peter Capaldi.
It will no doubt prove to be incredibly heartwarming for viewers of the series to see one former Doctor welcoming another to the role with such affection. And although McCoy's concerns on some previous Doctor Who castings have been noted - which he has confessed were completely unfounded - the actor appears to only be enthusiastic on the prospect of Gatwa in the title role.
