Former NFL player U.S. Rep. Colin Allred launches early campaign to push out Sen. Ted Cruz in 2024

Colin Allred announced his bid against U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican they have come closest to beating in more than two decades of GOP dominance in statewide elections.U.S. Rep. “We have a senator in Ted Cruz who has spent his two terms in the Senate pitting us against each other and trying to divide us,” Allred said. “He’s currently podcasting three times a week and doing everything he can to be on cable news as often as possible. We need to have a change in leadership." In 2020, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn easily fended off MJ Hegar, a decorated Air Force combat veteran and suburban mother who Democrats hoped would have crossover appeal. President Joe Biden’s push for a return to normalcy after the chaotic Trump years only got him within 6 percentage points of President Donald Trump in Texas.
“He really created and rode his own wave,” Steinhauser said. “Cruz is not going to face anyone like that. I don’t expect Colin Allred or anyone else to get that kind of support.” Allred said he pulled it off by taking the same approach he is in the Senate race:"By appealing broadly and by expanding who gets involved."
In Congress, Allred has voted with Democrats the vast majority of the time. But he has pushed back at times on key issues, including oil. Allred was among a handful of Texas Democrats who opposed early iterations of a methane fee in the Inflation Reduction Act. He has also led some significant bipartisan legislation, including a Veterans Affairs funding bill that green-lit a new hospital in Dallas.
