Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter brings signature intensity to coaching role with XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter celebrates after sacking Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jon Kitna for a 14-yard loss in the second half, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, in Cincinnati. Pittsburgh won 17-10. Porter was playing in his first game since suffering gunshot wounds to the buttocks and right thigh three weeks ago. Priest Holmes got things started with a 6-yard TD run, as K.C. went on to beat Houston 42-14.

As the start of the 2022 season was approaching, Porter received a phone call from longtime friend Hines Ward — a teammate with the Steelers from 1999 to 2006. Rather than looking to arrange one of their annual golf outings in Pittsburgh or Georgia, Ward was reaching out with an opportunity to join the staff with the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL.

A four-time Pro Bowl selection who totaled 98 sacks and 25 forced fumbles before retiring after the 2011 season, Porter works with the linebackers and pass rushers for the Brahmas. Through his playing career, Porter became known for his persona as much as his production. He rarely shied away from trash talk on the field or in the media, once calling the Indianapolis Colts “soft” before a 2005 playoff game Pittsburgh won on the way to the Super Bowl.

Porter’s leadership qualities were evident in the way his Steelers teammates rallied around him for fiery speeches, with longtime coach Bill Cowher often praising him as Pittsburgh’s emotional driver. “Coach Porter is a smooth, cool dude,” defensive end Mike Scott said. “He’s going to say some fiery things, but it’s in such a subtle way, you still get that intensity that you can understand what type of player he really was.”
