When agents interviewed Hardin, he “maintained that despite his two decades of police service, he did not realize he had broken the law on January 6 until he received a call from the FBI case agent.”

A former Salt Lake City police officer escaped jail time for taking part in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

According to a statement from the FBI, Hardin called a friend two days before the Capitol was stormed to say that he was going to Washington, D.C., to “fight for the United States.” The FBI also obtained video of Hardin at several locations inside the Capitol, and determined that his cellphone was there on Jan. 6.
