LOS ANGELES — Redshirt-junior Hudson Habermehl could have a lot of opportunities at tight end this season, according to UCLA coach Chip Kelly. It’s a coveted opportunity for any player, but more so for Habermehl, who only started playing football his senior year of high school.
“It was my last time to try a sport. I wasn’t even thinking about playing a college sport,” Habermehl said. “They put me at wide, just a bunch of fade routes, go high point the ball. Like basketball. I was getting rebounds.”, Habermehl has an unanticipated opportunity.“Any time we get it drawn up on the whiteboard, we’re like, ‘Oh, let’s go,’” Habermehl said. “It’s a great combo when we throw four guys out there because you can really spread us out, you can bring us in, you can do a lot with us.
“He was probably the best blocker we had at tight end,” redshirt-senior Michael Ezeike said. “But that’s one thing I’m trying to work on over the offseason. Just become a better blocker. Not only be a pass-catcher but also work on my blocking skills.”
