Steph McGovern has asked her followers to rethink the importance of 'qualifications'
February 20, 2020 - 11:29 GMT Aisha Nozari Steph McGovern took to Twitter on Thursday morning to ask that her followers rethink the notion of 'qualifications'. The former BBC Breakfast star retweeted a message that dissected employers' understanding of the word 'unskilled', pointing out that just because a potential hire might be 'unskilled' on paper, that doesn't mean that they don't have plenty of skills and experience.
var playerInstance=playerInstance || []; playerInstance['B9QTMbN7']=document.addEventListener=> { window.player=lf.player; }); The tweet read:"I don’t like the term unskilled- it generally means unqualified, I don’t like that term either! I spent most of my life 'unskilled' and 'unqualified' on paper, but have a huge amount of skill and experience that have served me well. We need to look past pieces of paper for worth.
Not only did Steph retweet the message, but she also added a statement of her own, writing:"I totally agree with this. Let's stop judging people solely on qualifications. Does my head in." It sounds as though Steph's followers share her sentiment. One replied to her tweet saying:"The University of Life offers way more knowledge and experience than any academic establishment can provide on its own." Another added:"It describes me perfectly. Left school with zero qualifications. Fell into the travel industry, did well and gained a lot of in house qualifications, all of which are now completely useless to me as a mum trying to return to work after career break.
