The fire erupted about 2:57 a.m. Monday in the rear area of the three-story house in the 2400 block of East 22nd Street in the Meadow Brook area.
Battalion Chief James Bowron said a second alarm was called to get more firefighters at the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to homes on both sides; crews were successful in keeping the ffire contained.
Bowron said some firefighters entered the burning structure to make an interior attack on the fire, but increasingly dangerous conditions forced them back outside.Bowron said the cause of the fire and the exact point of origin were under investigation.
