JERUSALEM — At least four Israelis were killed by a Palestinian gunman in the central West Bank on Tuesday, the latest in a series of tit-for-tat attacks that threatened to tip the region into a new, deadlier period of violence.Israeli forces killed the Palestinian gunman, according to local media, after he opened fire at a gas station near Eli, an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank.
In a a move not seen since the days of the second intifada of the early 2000s, Israel dispatched combat helicopters to rescue the injured soldiers. The helicopters fired at the Palestinian combatants on the ground to clear the area, the army said in a statement.
