Framber Valdez labored through a second consecutive start, failing to get out of the...

Brady Columbus, right, and his brother Bryant run to Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman before Brady threw out the first pitch before the start of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 in Houston. The Astros had reason to be confident that Framber Valdez on the mound could earn them a series win. On opening day in Anaheim, Valdez hurled six scoreless innings and yielded two hits. He faced a weaker Angels lineup Tuesday, one without Mike Trout or Jared Walsh.

Valdez’s troubles came to a head in a disastrous five-run fifth inning, which doomed the Astros to a 7-2 loss in the middle game of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. The Astros further compounded Valdez’s struggles with defense that was at worst porous and at best accident-prone. Jose Altuve’s injury excused absence was part of it, but not the only way in which the Astros appeared hamstrung. Other than a third-inning double play and a zippy relay throw by Kyle Tucker, the most memorable plays were gaffes.

The Astros wasted their first two base runners before a catcher's interference call and a walk set the table for Alex Bregman to tie the score on a two-out RBI double in the third inning.
