Sarah Polley and Frances McDormand reminisce on the tough truths they faced while rolling out ‘Women Talking,’ and the beauty they found in creating it.

That the film has not always been embraced reveals the primary structural obstacles it faces, even among its fellow Oscar nominees. “[After] 95 years [of the Oscars], one wholly expects a conversation to evolve—and just reading out the list of the best-picture nominees gives you an idea of how perhaps that conversation has not altered enough and evolved enough over time,” McDormand says. “We don’t even have to comment much past that if you just read the titles of those nominees.
A lot goes into what McDormand, as a result, now calls “the Convention.” It offers exposure for art, and unveils some unsavory industry politics. Polley has noticed the campaigning differences between pre- and post-Oscar nominations.
Polley keeps hearing about Mennonite women just starting to get out and see her film in droves. “Some [are going to a movie theater] for the first time in their lives to seeand they’re singing in four-part harmony along with the hymns, and they’re standing up and screaming at the end. There’s more buggies in the parking lot every day, and that has been the biggest thrill of a lifetime,” she says. “The fact that it’s being embraced by so many people in those communities….
