Fifty years ago this week, Harris caught the iconic “Immaculate Reception” in the Steelers first playoff victory over the Raiders.
But it’s more than that for the city: The name is a wordplay on the Catholic Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It came to symbolize the grit of Pittsburgh. As steelmaking was in decline even as the Steelers were building a dynasty in the 1970s, the Immaculate Reception gave a needed morale boost. “This was our cultural rallying point,” says one priest.
At the Pittsburgh International Airport, a statue immortalizing Harris at the moment of the “immaculate” catch stands next to another historical figure – George Washington.there’s a monument to the Immaculate Reception.
