His firm designed many of San Diego's office towers, hotels and hospitals, but its crowning achievement was the $28 million, all-concrete San Diego Stadium in Mission Valley, later renamed San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium and SDCCU (San Diego Credit Union) Stadium.
Frank L. Hope, one of San Diego's postwar architects who helped reshape the city and is best known for his role in developing the San Diego Stadium in Mission Valley, died earlier this month. He was 93. Hope headed the city's largest architectural firm, Hope Design Group, focusing on civic, commercial and institutional projects.
The firm soon won ever more commissions and grew the staff to meet the growing demand: McGill Hall at UC San Diego's Muir College ; the former Union-Tribune building in Mission Valley ; numerous hospitals and their expansions, including Pomerado Hospital ; Columbia Center office tower, ; and the east tower of the Inter-Continental Hotel, . Douglas F. Manchester, developer of both Columbia Center and the twin-towers Marriott, called Hope 'an incredible architect and a man for all seasons.
