Earlier this month, the nine Texas Parks and Wildlife Commissioners, led by Buc-ee’s founder and CEO Arch “Beaver” Aplin III,Todd Interests purchased in what they said was an effort to save the state park using eminent domain.

County Judge Linda Grant said the years-long threat of the park eventually closing has weighed on her and Freestone residents. Grant says she wishes the park could have been saved and she believes it’s a true asset to the community. But the tax revenue the project is promising could do a lot of good. Second precinct commissioner Will McSwane said it was “appalling” to condemn land for recreational purpose. He called it an abuse of power that could hurt private property rights.
