Residents in and around Los Angeles County gathered together anew on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, after two years of ceremonies scaled back or cancelled by the coronavirus pandemic

Campsites, parks and wild areas were packed under sunny skies, including the L.A. River Recreation Zones, which reopened Monday to their own brand of urban outdoor activities, including picnics, fishing and kayaking.
Meanwhile, solemn memorials filled the day around the region, from small and intimate events to major gatherings that attracted thousands. The Fiesta Hermosa, featuring a food and art fair, three concert stages, and much more, also hosted a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday. The Memorial Day Observance featured opening remarks from veteran and Hermosa Beach Councilmember Raymond Jackson and South Bay Coastal Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corp. presenting of colors.
At Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, Medal of Honor recipient Sammy L. Davis delivered a stirring speech. Davis is oft called “the real Forrest Gump” because footage of him receiving a Medal of Honor from President Lyndon Johnson appeared in the 1994 Oscar-winning movie that won best picture, and in which Tom Hanks won best actor.
Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin De Leon defended the envisioned traffic circle project and tried to assure residents that it will preserve the monument and its longstanding name, and that tributes to Vietnam War veterans and Mexican American winners of the Congressional Medal of Honor will be added.

Attendees commemorate Memorial Day on Monday, May 30, 2022, at the Rock For Vets concert and fundraiser at Jimmie E’s Grill in Signal Hill. Offshore in San Pedro, an evening Memorial Day service helped conclude LA Fleet Week. Down the coast, National Submarine Memorial West held at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach hosted the return of its unique “tolling the boats” ceremony, during which each of the 52 U.S. submarines lost during World War Two is honored as a bell is tolled.
Far from home, the Los Angeles Pierce College Choir was chosen to join other top youth choirs to perform with the U.S. Air Force Band at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The choir sang 14 patriotic songs this long weekend, including “God Bless America,” which featured 63 Pierce College singers.
