“It was a festive, happy, joyful time that morning,” Cabralez said, recalling how the school grounds were bustling with activity and excitement. “But the kids wanted to stay,” Cabralez said. “That’s hard. I’m sure it’s weighing down on the parents. So much is going through people’s minds.” The family later found out that the staff had locked the doors, and teachers had hidden the children behind that same maroon curtain on the stage for an hour, Cabralez said.
