Ohio State's Malaki Branham broke out with a big game at Nebraska, but his path to the NBA was paved with consistent performances.

In this game, it didn’t matter. To Branham, though, it did, and after an early-morning workout the next day he sent Holtmann a message.

Branham scored in double figures in 18 of his final 22 games after hitting that mark just once during his first 10 games. In eight of those 22 games, he topped at least 20 points, one of which was his mother’s favorite game. Inon Feb. 25, Branham poured in 31 points to power the Buckeyes to victory. “After the Indiana game I texted a few close friends, and I texted my boss, Gene Smith, and said, ‘We need to plan on Malaki not being here next year,’ ” Holtmann said.Through 10 games, Branham averaged 6.3 points per game. In the final 22, that nearly tripled to 17.0 despite playing against higher-level competition. During the 22 days between playing Wisconsin and Nebraska, Branham simply kept his head down and went to work.
