One way is circadian rhythm, a natural cycle that repeats every 24 hours and regulates many biological functions. Circadian rhythm is familiar to many organisms, from animals and plants to bacteria and algae. It acts as a master clock that controls rhythmic behavior. But circadian rhythm is not the only clock in town. Animals also have other clocks, called peripheral clocks, that work differently and can be influenced by external cues, such as feeding.

But qsm was not needed for eating in constant darkness. In that case, other genes, called period , timeless , cycle , and clock , were more critical. These genes are part of the core circadian clock mechanism. When the researchers mutated these genes, the flies lost their daily eating rhythm. Cyc and clk were crucial for creating two phases of eating and fasting, mainly in metabolic tissues, which are parts of the body that process food and energy.
