The Galaxy will play two home games this week, beginning Tuesday night against Club León, to open the 47-team World Cup-style tournament.

The last time the Galaxy competed in the Leagues Cup tournament there were only eight teams participating. This year’s edition now consists of every team in Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Liga MX, 47 in total, competing in a World Cup-style tournament – 15 three-team groups, with 2022 regular-season league champions LAFC and Pachua receiving byes into the knockout rounds.

“Nobody really wants to be off for a month, so the games are also important to try to continue to establish some rhythm and some process where we continue to improve for also the final stretch of the season.” León opened the tournament last Friday with a 16-15 penalty-kick shootout victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps. León defeated LAFC last month to win the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Galaxy will conclude group play Saturday at home against the Whitecaps, so if any team has an advantage, it would appear it is Vanney and the Galaxy.
