Gary’s newly-appointed school board learned Tuesday the district’s finances were in good shape now, but a referendum increasing local taxes could be necessary by 2028 to ensure continued stability.

District manager Mike Raisor offered the update Tuesday as the board held its first public meeting at the Gary Area Career Center.“We forecast a surplus in each of the next five years, but it gets dicey in year six and seven,” he told the board.

In 2020, voters approved a $72.1 million, eight-year referendum that shored up finances and increased dormant teacher salaries.Increasing enrollment is one route to boost the budget and avoid a referendum. It appears the district’s enrollment is stabilizing, but not growing. He said the district receives $8,800 per student, or about $36 million, based on enrollment. The state enrollment count day was pushed back from mid-September to Oct. 2, Raisor said.

Deputy district manager Mavis Snelson acknowledged the district’s low 47% passing IREAD state score and said she’s set a goal of 55% passing next year. “We know they’re capable of rising higher, even the goals we have here are not high enough,” she said.Teachers will have a professional development day Sept. 29 where they’ll be updated by the newest science of reading literacy curriculum.
