Coco Gauff exhibió contundencia el miércoles para instalarse en la tercera ronda del Abierto de Estados Unidos al imponerse el miércoles 6-3, 6-2 ante Mirra Andreeva.
En el duelo de adolescentes, la estadounidense Gauff se apoderó de la iniciativa al enfrentar por segunda vez a Andreeva en un torneo de Grand Slam este año. Gauff venció a la rusa en la tercera ronda del Abierto de Francia.
Unas de las principales favoritas al título en Flushing Meadows, Gauff atacó la red en 18 ocasiones y se llevó 15 de esos puntos.“He aprendido a ser agresiva”, dijo Gauff, de 19 años y sexta preclasificada del torneo. “Me funcionó bien la estrategia de tenerla arrinconada atrás”. Andreeva, quien a sus 16 años era la jugadora más precoz en el torneo, venía de alcanzar los octavos de final en Wimbledon.
La rival de turno de Gauff será la belga Elise Mertens. La 32da preclasificado remontó para vencer 3-6, 7-6 , 6-1 a la estadounidense Danielle Collins. También el miércoles, la estadounidense Taylor Townsend doblegó 7-6 , 7-5 a Beatriz Haddad Maia, la 19na cabeza de serie de Brasil que venía de alcanzar las semifinales en Roland Garros y los octavos de final en Wimbledon.
