Gen Z is the most mistrustful generation
. It's an all-too-common experience for many young people to regularly witness their local pastor, elected official, or relative losing it online. For young adults, these online experiences help shape their views of the institutions around them and the people who are supposed to be repositories for their trust. It's difficult to be optimistic when you look at the state of social trust in the US, but there are a couple of bright spots that may point to a better future.
Gen Z's institutional and interpersonal trust may be low, but it's possible that another form of trust —— is still quite high. The sharing economy allows young people to gain access to the wisdom of crowds like never before. Instead of taking the word of one or two people, Gen Z can place their trust in the aggregate, basing decisions on the experiences and opinions of others. Young people may not trust Amazon as a corporation, but they put a lot of stock in a product that has a 4.
Finally, it's possible that Gen Z has less trust because its members simply don't need it. A wealth of instantly accessible information has made it easier than ever to confirm claims and validate arguments. According to a, seven in 10 members of Gen Z say"they will fact-check" any claim made by a business or advertiser. And they're very comfortable digging in and finding answers for themselves.
Young people have reason to be skeptical. At the Aspen Institute event, an 18-year-old, Aidan Kohn-Murphy, said people shouldn't be surprised young people were feeling dispirited about the way things were going in the country."If you're looking to understand why young people are so depressed, with all due respect, look around."
