Gil Brandt, an innovator in the football world while with the Dallas Cowboys, has died at the age of 91, the team announced Thursday.
Brandt’s wife, Sara, said Gil passed away just before 2 a.m. Thursday in a hospice facility in Dallas.
“I’m glad to be part of his life,” Sara Brandt said. “We traveled a lot, we went to so many places. The pinnacles of his life was the Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor. Pretty nice life. He loved life and kept coming back and back and back. I guess that’s German stock. An Amazing man.”Brandt was an integral part of the Cowboys franchise’s history. Along with Tom Landry and Tex Schramm, he formed the triumvirate that transformed an expansion team into an NFL power.
As vice president of personnel for the Cowboys, Brandt helped assemble the rosters for teams that went on to win two Super Bowls and 13 division titles and enjoyed 20 consecutive winning seasons. He oversaw the selection or signing of 10 players who are now in the Hall of Fame and 15 who are in the Cowboys Ring of Honor.
“There are very few people that have been able to have the kind of generational impact that he did. Gil was as dedicated to growing this league and sport as anyone ever was, and we are all grateful and better for it,” Jones said.Advertisement Brandt was ahead of the curve in the use of technology and employed it to give the Cowboys an advantage. He put together an extensive network of friends and contacts he utilized to gather and exchange information.since its inception in ‘95. He was regular contributor on SiriusXM NFL radio and assisted the league with players at the Indianapolis scouting combine and the draft.
