Police in New York found a girl who went missing more than two years ago alive and well on Monday, under a staircase.

The Saugerties Police Department said it received information indicating that Paislee Shultis, a child who went missing at the age of 4, was being held in a secret room at a home in the town. After searching the home for an hour, police said they found Shultis and her noncustodial mother, Kimberly Cooper,"hiding in the dark and wet enclosure" under a closed staircase leading to the home's basement, according to News 12.

Police said Shultis was taken to a hospital for examination, where she was found to be in good health. She was later released and united with her older sister, authorities said.Shultis was reported missing from her home in Cayuga Heights, New York, on July 13, 2019, according to CBS 6. At the time, investigators believed she was abducted by Cooper and Kirk Shultis Jr., her noncustodial father.

Cooper and Shultis Jr., along with his father, Kirk Shultis Sr., all face charges in the case, police said. Cooper was arrested on charges including custodial interference and endangering the welfare of a child, while Shultis Jr. and his father were charged with felony custodial interference and misdemeanor child endangerment. Both Shultis men were arraigned and released on their own recognizance, and all three suspects have been ordered by authorities to stay away from Paislee Shultis.

The Saugerties Police Department has not yet responded to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.
