Dr. Tomi Mitchell said she is leaving her practice after 10 years, citing a lack of support from the government and feeling betrayed.
Mitchell has operated the Pasqua South Medical Centre in Regina for the past 10 years and recently announced she would be closing up shop in response to funding issues, stress and the perceived lack of support from the government with the easing of measures to stem the spread of COVID-19.
“We have exposed our families to COVID. Many of the physicians are seniors with comorbidities,” she said. For the government to drop all mandates and, effectively, declare COVID-19 to be over for the time being feels like a “betrayal” to Mitchell, who said the cracks in the health system — which only worsened during the pandemic — remain.
“The vast majority of that has nothing to do with COVID-19. It’s all the people that weren’t seen in primary care weren’t seen before they got sick,” said Meili.
