Is a nude our generation’s love letter?
Nudes: cheap or chic? Sure, it’s not a poetically penned love letter, but a picture does say a thousand words. And sometimes those thousand words are good, perfect, beautiful even. Other times, though, like an erotica book you pick up by the cashier at the gas station, these words are dreadful, shame-inducing, and—perhaps worst of all—utterly mundane.
If you hadn’t already noticed by my witty turns of phrase, I am a homosexual. This means two things: I love, and I send and receive thousands of nudes a day. I have, by process of osmosis—and thanks to grueling responses to previous nudes of mine, one asking how long I’d been in the ICU—learned the art of taking the perfect nude. I am not thin, I am not cis, but I have spent years training in the craft of working with what I have, and crucially, enhancing it.
Nobody wants nudes edited into obscurity, distorting the reality of the wonderful body that you have, but we do want to escape the everyday for a moment. We want to disappear into a seductive, febrile world full of sexual opportunity. And so the first step to taking a decent nude is to remove anything that reminds us of the humdrum. Anything that puts a question mark around your body—which should be an exclamation point!—has to go.
Over dinner last week in London, a friend who is an expert at taking nudes—we’ll call her Emily, because that’s her real name—told me the following. “My main advice is to keep mixing up your angles, because we all have one or two go-to poses where you know your body looks how you like it, but if you keep sending variations on the same picture it's diminishing returns,” she said. “For them and, more importantly, for you.”sending the nude to? Really, it’s about pleasing yourself.
