Google Suddenly Makes Windows More Secure For 1 Million Microsoft Users

The bad news is, and Google readily admits as much, that this disruption to the Glupteba operation is likely only to be temporary. By implementing blockchain technology when it comes to command and control mechanisms, the resilience of Glupteba is much harder to overcome. So, although this critical C2 infrastructure has been removed from the hands of the cybercriminals behind the botnet, it will likely recover relatively quickly, according to the Google team.

All of which means that users should also be taking action to protect themselves from such threats. As well as the rather obvious advice of not downloading pirated software, not opening unsolicited documents, always keeping your devices updated with the latest operating system versions and being protected by security software, password management also plays its part.

Because credential theft is key to much of what Glupteba does, ensuring that your passwords are robust, secure and unique can go a long way in damage mitigation. The easiest way to ensure these three measures are met is to use a password manager to set strong passwords that are unique to each account or service and safely stored to keep out prying eyes. Multi-factor authentication should also be employed for every account that supports it as an additional security layer.
