Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy on Sunday skirted questions about whether the GOP-led House should open an official impeachment inquiry into President Biden over his family’s past foreign business deals.

Republicans say lucrative overseas deals worth millions made by Mr. Biden’s son, Hunter, corrupted then-Vice President Biden, but they have yet to draw a direct connection to him with the alleged influence peddling.

“I’m not an attorney, and I’m not going to go there,” Mr. Cassidy said of potential House impeachment proceedings on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The Louisiana Republican went on to say that investigations led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer of Kentucky are doing a “good service” to the country, but House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has a tough balancing act between listening to impeachment demands and conducting usual business like avoiding a government shutdown in the coming weeks.

“Is there something where Hunter was trading upon his father’s name, and his father was enabling? That is something to know,” Mr. Cassidy said. “On the other hand, do we need to pass a funding bill? Absolutely. So hopefully, they too can be considered separately. I don’t know what Kevin’s strategy.”
