As part of his pitch for sending taxpayer funds to private schools, Greg Abbott has repeatedly claimed that schools are better funded in Texas than they’ve ever been. But Texas ranks far behind the national average in per-pupil spending and teacher pay.
The 2023 spending is actually lower than it was in 2015 and 2016, when adjusted correctly, in numbersThose figures show that since Abbott took office in 2015, total education spending has actually gone down, when adjusted for inflation.
Based on the budget recommendations made by the state House and Senate, the Legislature seems open to increased education spending, and Abbott has said he would support this as well, but they don’t appear ready to go as far as Democrats or public education advocates would wish.
