AUSTIN, Texas (KEYE) -- The time is almost up for Governor Greg Abbott, R-Texas, to either sign or veto bills.
“All of these bills that have yet to be signed face the possibility if not the probability that they're going to be vetoed,” Abbott said. “I’ve already looked at all of the bills that I’ve agreed to sign so far, and with each passing day, there’ll be more vetoed that simply are not going to make it to the finish line.”During the regular session, tension between Texas top Republican leaders, Governor Greg Abbott and Lt.
Tensions only grew after Abbott said during a bill signing ceremony last week that bills may face vetoes if the House and Senate do not reach an agreement on his top campaign promise – property tax cuts. “I can’t assure that any bill that has not yet been signed is going to be signed, Abbott said. “unless and until the Texas Senate and Texas House get together and come up with an agreement about how we are going to implement $17.6 billion in cutting property taxes.”The Governor’s suggested threat today to veto a large number of Senate bills is an affront to the legislative process and the people of Texas.
Patrick says both the House and the Senate have $17.6 billion in their budget for a tax cut. However, he says the Senate’s plan will give 5.7 million homeowners $1,200 to $1,400 in a tax cut, while the House’s plan gives about $740 per homeowner. “The Texas Senate and I will not pass a bill that gives $17.6 billion and spreads it across homeowners and all businesses and by doing so takes $500 to $700 dollars every year out of the pockets of homeowners.
