Greater Cleveland Aquarium is celebrating the arrival of newborn weedy sea dragons, the rare cousin to the seahorse that is notoriously difficult to breed in captivity.

is celebrating the arrival of newborn weedy sea dragons, the rare cousin of the seahorse that is notoriously difficult to breed in captivity. The aquarium becomes one of fewer than 20 marine life facilities around the world to produce a successful hatching.

Greater Cleveland Aquarium opened ten years ago but is housed in the Powerhouse, a building that goes back to 1892. Curator Ray Popik thinks the aquarium’s unique design within the historic structure contributed to the momentous occasion. Following that vertical dance, the female lays her eggs and deposits them on the tail of the male, which fertilizes the eggs and carries them until they hatch. The weedy sea dragons, which are native to the waters off Australia and arrived in Cleveland in March 2018, initially mated in January 2020. But it failed to produce viable offspring.

The aquarium plans to put some of the young weedy sea dragons on display soon for public view in a temporary exhibit not far from their parents.
