'Brewer’s impact on high school sports for more than three decades should never go unnoticed,' sportswriter BenThomasPreps says of Greg Brewer, who died last week. 'He was a leading voice for officials, not just in Alabama, but across the nation.'
High school football Friday nights are always a hectic race from start to finish. This past Friday, my night -- and that of many others – started on a sad note.that former director of officials Greg Brewer had died.Retired executive director Steve Savarese was one of three AHSAA executive directors to work with Greg during a career that spanned 31 years. He was hired by Herman L. “Bubba” Scott and also worked with Dan Washburn and Savarese.
My friend and former boss, Josh Bean, wrote a fitting tribute to Greg on his Facebook page over the weekend. Josh wrote that Greg Brewer believed in high school sports.“As officials faced increased taunts, whether verbally from the stands or anonymously through social media, he worked tirelessly to encourage and support officials,” Josh wrote. “There was no better ambassador for high school officiating and high school sports than Greg Brewer.
“I really think Greg’s brother said it best. Greg had a way of giving whoever he was talking to at a certain moment his undivided attention. He made them feel like they were the most important person in the world. He made everyone feel that way.”
