Grisham has 4 RBIs, Padres beat D-backs in Tatis’ return -

Trent Grisham had two doubles and four RBIs, Xander Bogaerts added a two-run homer and the Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 in Tatis’ return from a PED suspension Thursday night.

Manager Bob Melvin said when the ball came off Rojas’ bat, he didn’t even look to see where it landed because he thought it was a sure double. Then he heard the fans roar and realized Tatis - who made the switch to the outfield from shortstop during the offseason - had made the catch. Bogaerts mashed a 405-foot shot in the third for his fifth homer of the season. Matt Carpenter also had a solo homer.

The Padres jumped to a 5-1 lead after Carpenter’s homer in the fourth, but the D-backs responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning off righty Michael Wacha to tie it. Rojas had a two-run single in the rally. The D-backs lost despite a 12-7 advantage in hits. Christian Walker had a three-hit night, including a double and an RBI.The Diamondbacks also made roster news Thursday, though it was a subtraction instead of an addition.

San Diego Padres Hope Tatis Brings Energy, Maturity When PED Ban EndsSan Diego Padres Hope Tatis Brings Energy, Maturity When PED Ban EndsEl Niño is coming and it could be quite the storm. On Thursday night at Arizona, Fernando Tatis Jr. will be announced as the leadoff hitter for the San Diego Padres and settle into a big league batter’s box for the first time since the last game of the 2021 season. One of baseball’s most electrifying players will return from an 80-game PED suspension that shocked and angered his teammates and an entire fan base. If a jaw-dropping power display during a rehab stint at Triple-A El Paso is any indication, the Padres will be getting back the player who was an All-Star in 2021.
