In 1741, three Black people were burned to death in a public execution for their alleged roles in planning a slave rebellion. It was a brutal act that few know took place, said organizers of a prayer vigil held at the beginning of February at the Union County Courthouse in Elizabeth.
“I wanted this to be recognized during Black History Month, and this is just a piece of that story. There’s a whole lot of atrocities that happened around that time,” said Salaam Ismial, 64, director of the. “This is a part of Elizabeth’s history that we are not recognizing, and we’re not even talking about.”
