All told, groups trying to defeat the measure outspent the “yes” side $20.1 million to $17.5 million.

However, in the final two weeks before the Aug. 8 election and beyond, the “yes” side outspent the “no” side, $13.4 million to $9.7 million. As is the case for most political campaigns, the bulk of the spending for both sides went toward advertising, particularly television.

Although Issue 1 did not directly reference abortion, Republican lawmakers specifically put it up for a vote to try to defeat the abortion measure in November. Had it passed, future constitutional amendments would have needed to get 60% support in a statewide vote to pass, compared to the current 50% standard.

As was the case earlier in the campaign, the largest donor to One Person One Vote, the main anti-Issue 1 campaign group, was the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a dark-money group from Washington, D.C. which gave $2.5 million. Some of the group’s largest individual donors though included Michael Bloomberg, the businessman and former New York City Mayor who gave $250,000, and Lynn Schusterman, a Tulsa, Oklahoma philanthropist who also gave $250,000.
