CLEVELAND, Ohio — Triston McKenzie’s return to the mound was over almost as soon as it began Sunday as the Guardians right-hander struggled to command his pitches in a 5-1 loss to Baltimore at Progressive Field.
Jordan Westburg’s double, an RBI ground out by Jorge Mateo and a bases-loaded walk by Anthony Santander accounted for the Orioles runs as McKenzie was relieved by Eli Morgan with two outs in the inning.The Orioles added a run in the fourth against Morgan on doubles by Mateo and Adley Rutschman. Rutschman reached base in his first four plate appearances, including a pair of walks and two extra-base hits.
Baltimore’s win moved the Orioles 2 1/2 games in front of Tampa Bay in the American League East Division. The Rays fell to Toronto earlier in the day as the Orioles’ magic number to clinch the division shrank to 3.
