The Cleveland Guardians confirmed Shane Bieber re-injured his UCL during the team’s April 2 game against the Seattle Mariners.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland Guardians confirmed Shane Bieber will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, ending his season as it had just began.
After a promising spring, Bieber had a strong start to the 2024 season, striking out a league-leading 20 and pitched 12 scoreless innings in starts against Oakland and Seattle.According to the team, Bieber began experiencing right elbow pain after his starts in Oakland and Seattle. Imaging revealed that Bieber had injured the same ligament in his right elbow that had been an issue last season as well. The team determined surgery was the best option moving forward.
“The amount of empathy and pain that I feel with Shane, for Shane, that’s really what speaks the loudest right now,” Vogt said. “This guy powered through a start the other night and was elite. The things that he can do, even when injured, are really special, so my heart goes out to Shane and his family. This is devastating news for them.”
Bieber’s injury is the latest for Cleveland’s pitching staff. Reliever Trevor Stephan recently had Tommy John surgery, and Gavin Williams has been sidelined since spring training with elbow soreness.
