Gun suicides rose 11% in past decade, linked to cities with lax gun policies: New research

The number of suicides committed with firearms increased 11% over the past decade and was driven primarily by deaths in cities with more relaxed gun policies, according to new research first obtained by ABC News.

The data analyzed in the report spans 2010 to 2020 and comes from 752 cities with populations of 50,000 or more across the country. In addition to areas with less strict gun laws, cities with fewer walkable areas where residents are more isolated are more prone to higher rates of gun suicide, according to the report.While much public attention has focused on gun homicides, the rate of suicides has also grown throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
