We chat with HaileysOnIt ceators devinbunje and Nick Stanton about collaborating with Auli’i Cravalho and Manny Jacinto on their new Disney series:
Disney's all-new animated series Hailey's On It! premieres Thursday, June 8th on Disney Channel and will be available to stream the next day on Disney+. The show follows a 14-year-old girl named Hailey who discovers that the fate of the world rests on her completing an elaborate bucket list. However, once she sees that kissing her best friend, Scott , goes hand-in-hand with saving the day, their relationship becomes more complicated than ever before.
A version of that scene ended up in the first episode, but from that, we really built a world. Who is this character? And we came up with the character of Hailey Banks, and she has this next door neighbor Scott Denoga. They're best friends, but they could be more than friends. And then Beta became a big piece of that. They have this smartphone teddy bear from the future who's with them on all their adventures. The pieces all came together from that, and we built a world around it.
If something didn't get a laugh, we could change it right there on set and fix it, which was sort of great to know right away that everything was taken care of. In animation, that process is sort of spread out over many months. We've just found that you need to come up with different spots along the way where you can kind of replicate that. We do table reads on the scripts, then we have a pitch for the storyboards, then we do screenings of the animation when it comes back.
I'm not sure if you were Kim Possible fans, but Hailey and Scott actually remind me a little bit of Kim and Ron. Did they happen to cross your mind at all? We got lucky with Gary. When we recorded for the pilot, the pandemic had just happened, so we could only pull from a pool of actors that had their own studios at their houses, and Gary was on the list. We're like, "Oh, we like him. Let's give him a try," and he just ran with the character and made it into something that's a hundred times better than we ever could have imagined. We're super grateful that he was available and it worked out.
