DETROIT — Clad in matching charcoal shirts, they crammed into chairs above the third-base dugout to create a type of atmosphere this ballpark won’t see for the rest of this regular season. Wayne State University sits a mile away from Comerica Park in downtown Detroit, a city craving excitement amid an awful baseball season.
Wayne State’s entire baseball team sat in section 134, atop the home dugout they refused to support. Brown spent “countless” games in that same situation, spectating in hopes of one day participating. He played for three seasons at the Division II school, a place that’s not supposed to supply major league talent.. He is something of an inspiration for players of a similar ilk, those major colleges ignore and major league teams simply take fliers on.
Brown struck out six, surrendered five hits and allowed the first two runs of his major league career. After two starts and 11 innings, his ERA is 1.50. Brown retired the final seven Tigers he saw, finishing his outing with far better command and rhythm than he started. Brown sauntered off the mound unmoved. He enjoyed an advantage before ever toeing the slab. Yordan Alvarez annihilated a flat changeup from Tigers starter Drew Hutchison for a first-inning solo home run. The lineup struck nine hits and scored four runs across 5 ⅓ innings against him. Kyle Tucker supplied a two-run shot to afford Brown some comfort in these friendly confines.
